How to Decide on a Floor Plan for Your Custom Home

When you decide to hire Powell Custom Homes to build you a beautiful home, the next step will be to decide on the right floor plan. For some, this can be one of the most difficult things, as there are several things to consider. Let's look at a few of the things you should consider before you decide on a floor plan for your custom home.

The Size You Need For Your Family

Size matters when it comes to your custom home and your family size will help to determine the space you need. Maybe you need five bedrooms to allow everybody to have their own room. Before you go any further with your custom home floor plan, consider the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you want.

Along with the bedrooms and bathrooms, consider how large you'd like the living room, the kitchen, and any other areas of the home to be. This should be your first consideration before you move onto any other portions of your floor plan.

Consider the Now and the Later

Today, you may have young children capable of sharing a bedroom and in need of a space for their toys. A few years from now, however, you could be living with a couple of teenagers in need of their own bedroom and space for studying.

When you design your custom home floor plan, it's important to consider the now and the later. You want to make sure you plan for today, but also for five years, ten years, or even twenty years into the future.

If you plan to live in your custom home for a decade or longer, it's a good idea to plan for how your family will grow. You should also plan for how space will fit you after your children move out if that's going to be something in your future.

Look at the Lot

While it's a bit less important than the size and planning for today and the future, your lot does factor into your custom home floor plan. The placement of windows and certain rooms may be adjusted to gain more natural light at the times of day you prefer to let the light into certain rooms. In addition, you may want a certain view while you're doing dishes or working in the kitchen.

Consider your lot and how the view might be impacted based on where each room is within your floor plan.

Add Upgrades and Amenities

Along with the basics of size and room placement, it's important to make sure you add in upgrades and amenities. If you prefer to have the laundry room on the second floor, make sure this is reflected in the floor plan. In addition, if you want upgrades, such as a larger outdoor deck or a balcony off the master suite, these should also be reflected in the floor plan.

There are many things to consider when building a custom home with Powell Custom Homes. Your floor plan design will make a difference in function, design, and feel for your new home. Make sure you take the time to consider the options and what will work best for your family.
